I don't usually drink wine for breakfast, but I was almost convinced to when I met Louisa Payne.
You see, this week I met with Louisa - founder of Brixton Wine Club. Who are all about canned wine, which means wine anywhere, anytime.
Clever acquisition strategies will always be more valuable than marketing spend.
We spoke about:
- The journey of fashion design and trend analysis into starting a business. Louisa's founder journey started with a wine club of friends at home, discovering the (less snobby and more fun) world of wine tasting. Let's say the slightly more enjoyable side of listening to someone tell you about grapes and wine making techniques!
- Louisa's Wine Tap Van that's served thousands of festival goers, spectators at F1 and customers better wine at events. What really stuck here was before any investments were made, Louisa would be the person with a clipboard at festivals doing market research on current wine traders, pricing and strategies. Not too long later, The Wine Tap Van was born.
- Subscriptions. In a world of digital and physical subscriptions, does every product have a place in subscriptions or are we forcing everything to be recurring. We spoke about understanding consumer behaviour in light of creating a sustainable and sticky subscription model. Craft beer, wine, coffee and supplements have done well in these spaces, based on understanding the behaviour of your customers.
- Marketing and growth as the key to direct to consumer brands as an investable business. There's only a finite amount of digital real estate out there, which requires brands to really take advantage of consumer attention when they can in attempt to capture, acquire and retain them. Clever acquisition strategies will always be more valuable than marketing spend. (highly recommended The DTC playbook by Mike Stevens on this).
